Visibility

My Visibility series of kiln formed glass explores the impact landscape has on our understanding of ourselves. It is influenced by Paul Piff’s research on awe, which examines how the sense of reverence we feel in a spectacular landscape reduces our egocentric tendencies, effectively “dissolving the self”. I’m interested in the protective and strengthening impacts of these moments, and whether elements of that experience can be accessed through art.

The dunes and marshlands of the North Norfolk Coast are where I “dissolve” and are referenced in some of these works. Others are based on cloudscape sketches which I first made in the Hakone National Park in Japan but continued at home during the Covid lockdowns, when the sky’s constant movement provided sustenance and hope.
